Nuclear Core Looks Like Sketch Model

To the right is an image of a nuclear core and control rod setup. The control rods look surprisingly similar in form to simple PVC pipes with caps at the end, however the ratio of length of rod to radius is much greater. We believe that for aesthetic purposes, our lower radius:length ratio will be superior. Actual control rods are made of stainless steel and would not glow, but we also conclude that taking artistic license is acceptable for the entertainment value for our visitors.

Sketch Model Inspiration

The sketch model is designed to look like radioactive nuclear cores have now started glowing radiation. We believe that the glow will result in familiar semantics for the players based on popular conceptions of radioactive meltdowns, even if players are not familiar with the exact functioning of nuclear reactors. The rod is made out of a simple PVC that would be low-cost to use in reality, as well as durable. For the size, we considered whether to have the rods sit flush/slightly below the top of the core versus protrude from the top of the core. This was due to our desire to test both aesthetic and function. From an aesthetic perspective. we conclude the rods look more appropriate flush with the core because of the glowing affect. We are also evaluating whether a blacklight paint or transmissive material that would change lighting based on LEDs installed inside the rod and cores would be more visually pleasing.
